Inspired by the desire and need to reimagine how we manufacture footwear, consume, and regenerate materials after their use, 'Yaa's Slipper' explores circularity within 3D printed footwear, employing a print-on-demand model. Just as Yaa Asantewa fought against British Colonial rule, I, as a designer/artist, will use my work to combat 'Waste Colonisation' in Ghana. It's a stark reality that an excessive amount of fast fashion waste, donated to charity shops in the Global North (UK, US, and many others), is shipped to Ghana for resale, providing revenue for the local community. However, as the quality of fast fashion declines, local Ghanaians are forced to discard the items they cannot sell, resulting in an excess of dumped waste in less desirable areas. How can we reimagine the future?
