The Temple of the Tooth, also known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa, is a significant Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is considered the most important Buddhist shrine in the country and houses a tooth relic of the Buddha, which is symbolically bathed every Wednesday. The temple dates back to the 16th century and is located in the Royal Palace complex near the ancient Royal Palace and the Kandy Lake.
The temple’s architecture is characterized by intricate carvings using gold, silver, bronze, and ivory, reflecting a unique Kandyan architectural style. It is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and visitors must remove their footwear before entering. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its cultural and religious significance.
Inside the temple, the tooth relic is kept in a series of six dagoba caskets of diminishing size, each housed in a gold casket shaped like a stupa.
